Bel Canto was my second Ann Patchett book. I tried to read Run with no success. I know she is a well-liked author so I wanted to give her another shot. I'm glad I did. Bel Canto had me wrapped up. I was really surprised because I have zero interest in opera and this book revolved around opera. OK, so it also involved a prolonged group hostage situation as well but... opera was the connecting point. Regardless, it was good.
Have you ever read a bad Baldacci book? Well, neither have I. Zero Day didn't disappoint. It is a stand alone novel focused on John Puller, a military investigator in the Army. Puller investigates a military family murdered in the coal hills of West Virginia. Being a Baldacci book, it drags in multiple federal agencies and the threat of national security. Recommendation: read it
Kidnapping, reading and the mob? Not a likely combination. Rebecca Makkai did a wonderful job meshing the three together. Reading this book made me miss the thought of being a teacher and recommending books to students. Oh well, life goes on as it did in this book. I found The Borrower to be a quick and easy read.
